Trust Your Gut - Day 52

Today's inspiration comes from health advocate, Jordan Rubin, author of the Maker's Diet. In a recent newsletter he discusses the digestive tract and what's really going on with your gut. Have you ever experienced butterflies before a major presentation or had a stomachache after making a big decision? Jordan shares that this is your body's way of responding to stressful situations. Notice that the feelings aren't happening between your ears. There's scientific evidence that the body has two emotional centers — in the brain and also in the gut. Next time your body talks, pay careful attention to what it's saying.

We are all taught from childhood to believe that our brain is essentially the "boss" of our body. While it is true that our brain is the centerpiece of our mental capacity and nervous system, it is also a fact that there are nearly one hundred million nerve cells in our digestive system alone — about the same number found in our spinal cord!

Because of the multitude of nerve cells that are located in the gut, your capacity for feeling and for emotional expression is in large part dependent upon the condition of this sensitive area. By the time you add together the number of nerve cells in the esophagus, stomach, and small and large intestines, there are more nerve cells in the overall digestive system than there are in the peripheral nervous system. Pretty staggering, huh?

Most people would say the brain alone determines whether you are happy or sad, but they have their facts skewed. It seems the gut is more responsible than we ever imagined for how we feel. So doesn't it make sense that we should treat this part of our bodies with utmost care and attention? When people come to me asking for advise or for direction with their health, I very often tell them to first begin educating themselves, but along the way, go with their own gut instinct. Although I have always believed in following these instincts, I now have a better understanding of why following your gut really is sound advise. What steps are you taking to nourish, cleanse and purify your digestive tract? What is one thing that you can do today that will move you one step closer to better health and a stronger, more efficient digestive system?

Monday's Daily Juice:
1 qt. strawberry, goji berry, blood orange, young coconut, spirulina
1 qt. master cleanse
1.5 qt. pineapple, parsley, VitaMineral Green
1.5 qt. celery, asparagus, cucumber, kale, jalapeƱo, cilantro, orange bell pepper, radish, tomatoes, garlic, lime

Great post! I love knowing about all this, and it makes so much sense! The body and mind really are not two separate things.

We just got an interesting book called Molecules of Emotion by Candace Pert, that is all about the science behind mind-body medicine.
I look forward to diving into it soon.

Penni, we were just discussing this at our last week's meeting. Someone was also describing how our intestines actually operate as our 2nd immune system!

BTW, thanks for what you posted yesterday. It's so true, we need to shine brightly for God! Not for ourselves, but for Him. He's all that matters. Thanks so much!

It's so very true that our bodies give us messages all the time. Our intelligence doesn't just reside in our gray matter as many believe.

Those of us who are intuitive and empathetic know that there is so much more going on in and around our bodies. I was just telling Dea the other day that some raw friends (inlcluding you, Penni) are surely empaths (not the science fiction type, but the authentic scientifically studied type).

You've probably known since a very young age that you could understand things without counting solely on your thinking. I'd be surprised to hear you say differently.

I think (feel) that you are an amazing woman, genuinely caring for others.

Your posts are always a joy to read.

When I was a kid I lived my life by my stomach. I always new if I should do something depending on how it felt. I would get this feeling in my stomach right before something bad would happen. My friends even learned to listen to it and saved themselves some trouble.

I once got this feeling driving and it was so strong I thought I was going to get in an accident. I later found out it was because I was driving to my estranged husband's house and he had a woman there. I guess i should have listened. :o)

I began to ignore it as I got older and now...who knows.

I love everything you said about the gut today and what you wrote yesterday as well. That quote from yesterday is one of my favorites. I first heard it in Akeelah and the Bee (wonderful movie) and it moved me to tears. You have such a wealth of good info to share. Last year after I started eating living foods and delving into intentions, mind body connections and spiritual growth, I prayed for friends who would enrich my mind and help me grow. Great post! As a person who's tango'ed with Crohn's disease for years, I can truly appreciate the truth in all of this. It is so much more than the brain, because if our brains knew it all we wouldn't have a fraction of the digestive epidemics in this world that we do. Our poor guts typically suffer at the hands of our brains overfeeding it, and wanting more.
